Let Them Help You
One of the most effective parenting strategies is allowing your children to help you with everyday tasks. While it may seem slower or messier to have your child assist, the developmental benefits are significant.
Why letting children help matters
When children participate in household chores and activities, they develop a sense of responsibility and belonging. They learn that they are capable contributors to the family, which builds self-esteem and confidence.
Age-appropriate tasks
- Toddlers (2–3 years): Picking up toys, putting dirty clothes in a hamper, wiping up small spills
- Preschoolers (4–5 years): Setting the table, watering plants, helping sort laundry by color
- School age (6+): Preparing simple snacks, folding clothes, helping with grocery lists
Tips for success
- Give clear, simple instructions appropriate to their age
- Praise effort, not just results
- Be patient – it will take longer, and that is okay
- Make it fun by turning tasks into games
The goal is not perfection but participation. When children feel they are genuinely helping, they develop pride in their contributions and learn valuable life skills.
